Communique #8

(Note from the DM: Grigor receives this on the 24th of Spring, just as the Sea Hero rounds the horn and heads north along the western coast)

Grigor,

I don’t know where to begin. It has been over 70 days since you and your fellows rode out of Halvenspring, but it seems like a lifetime given the events that have occurred. I guess the best route is to give you the sequence of events chronologically, even where the narrative splits.

The Knights of Mist Valley rode out early on the morning of the 4th of Winter Waning. Things were relatively quiet for a day or two. Then on the 6th a cleric of Omnos named Feanor arrived. He announced that he served the true Omnian Church, that of the Chovalian Empire, and called upon all of the faith to swear fealty to the Chovalian Church.  When Father Theodore invited him into the village church to discuss things, Feanor denounced him as a false teacher who consorted with witches; witches he identified as me, Onsmythe, and Klaus. Your father and Marc Risus drove him out of town, letting him know he and his brand of Omnianism were not welcome.

Early the next morning, before sunrise, I was awoken by the cries of “fire”.  The church had gone up in flames. We were able to contain the fire but the church was lost and Theodore badly burned, almost to death. Onsmythe was able to get to him in time and heal the most severe wounds, but he slipped into a deep sleep (Klaus called it a coma) from which he could not be wakened. That evening Dorian came to me in our tower. He believed that Feanor returned and set the fire, and he, Wren, and Uval were going after him. I was invited along, and I went. We left that night.

We tracked Feanor and his retinue, some 12 guards (who had not entered the village with him originally) north to Halvenstomb. We found them taking rooms in the inn. He had denounced the Halvenstomb priest as well earlier that day, but Halvenstomb had not driven him out even though they were clearly uneasy about his presence. Uval wanted to confront Feanor directly, but instead we took Wren’s advice and set a hidden watch on the church instead. Sure enough Feanor’s group showed up past midnight, laying oil doused wood along the building. The Halvenstomb priest, Norris by name, was awake and came out to confront them. Feanor split his head open with his mace, killing him instantly. We attacked in that moment and slew Feanor and his guards.

It was a hard fight, and I killed several with spells. I changed a little that night. We all did. Each of us had killed redcaps before but this was different. The villagers came out and Sarl, the de-facto mayor I guess, put us under loose arrest for the next day. That evening (10th of Winter Waning) he held an informal trial examining the event and declared us absolved of any wrong doing (and thanked us for our actions).

The following morning we left Halvenstomb and began making our way back to Halvenspring. We took a different route, swinging further to the south, and stumbled upon a tomb in the Firnockt. After a short group vote, we descended into the tomb.

The tomb was a mess of old forgotten crypts, and redcap warrens. We moved from room to room, fighting and examining both. We barricaded ourselves in defensible rooms and spent several nights while wren healed us. Each of us took our turn staring down the reaper; I sincerely wish we had someone with Fyn’s mechanical expertise and attention to detail – traps hurt us as much as the redcaps and walking dead did. Along the way we found quite a bit of gold and some magical items, mostly weapons and armor and such. No spells although I did acquire a staff of not inconsiderable power and a few wands. The bracers I mentioned in my last post (oh so very long ago) worked admirably and no doubt saved my life multiple times. After a week of working through the tomb we came upon a long tunnel. Having some familiarity with your adventures I suspected that this was one of the interconnected tunnels that the redcaps are using to move underground. After a brief discussion we decided to continue to explore, and thus went down the tunnel on the 18th of Winter Waning. As near as I can tell this is when you sent me Journal Entry 22, though it would be sometime before I would be able to receive it.

We wandered that long tight tunnel for 7 days. There were many unlabeled intersections, but it seemed that every choice we made led only to more apparently endless tunnel. Only once did we encounter a band of redcaps larger than 4. Twelve redcaps and 2 steel toes came upon us in the dark while we camped and we only survived because the narrow tunnel prevented more than 2 from coming at us at once. Even still Uval barely survived and Dorian was severely wounded. Wren’s healing ability was tested as never before after the fight, but she rose to the challenge.

Our food supplies were running low so it was with a sigh of relief that we made a choice on the 8th day that led us to another tomb complex. It took us 3 days to clear that particular tomb, and we stepped into sunlight for the first time in 17 days on the morning of the 4th of Spring Waxing (Happy belated New Year by the by). We did not know where we were, save only that we were in the mountains.  We took a day to climb a peak and get a lay of the land.

We were in the West Almeneids of course, just north of Morning Mirror Lake. We took a day to rest on the peak and discuss our options. The Almeneids are largely impassable, so running along the range was out of the question, and we were on the east face so the Hidden Hills were out even if that was where we wished to go. Unfortunately the only viable option (and the one we took) seemed to be to head down out of the mountains and through the Tainted Wood section of the Firnockt on our way back to Halvenspring. In hindsight I suppose we could have re-entered the tunnels, but I think you can understand why we would have been very reluctant to do so. So the Tainted Wood it was.

It took us 2 days to come down off the mountain and enter the woods. The Tainted Wood… it was a nightmare. Almost no sunlight pierced the canopy, and every moment we were on edge. It was eerily quiet. Half way through the first day I heard a faint whispering. It was constant and though I could not make out the words it made my flesh crawl and my mind reel with a primal nameless horror. I found myself singing songs, doing math problems, repeating recipes – anything to distract from that mad whispering. Would that I had spoken up to my companions. Alas I did not and it was that evening that Uval went insane.

We began making camp and Dorian and I were agreeing that the Tainted Wood was not a good place for a fire when Uval walked over to Wren and suddenly buried his greataxe in her stomach. He tore it free, bringing out a good portion of her internals, and made to behead her when Dorian tackled him. Not knowing what to make of the situation Dorian tried to reason with Uval and subdue him. Uval began screaming. I was careful to take mental note of what he said. Here it is (repetitions deleted):
“The chains loosen!” “The God King comes, the Shadow falls, now is the time of chaos!” “The tide sweeps north, the fount shall be poisoned! The Harbinger lands on the shores of night!” “Wicker must not rise again!”

While Uval screamed these things over and over, he (being quite a bit stronger than Dorian) swung his heavy crossbow around from his back, put the point in Dorian’s chest, and pulled the trigger. The bolt punched all the way through him throwing his body back onto the forest floor. I then blew Uval head apart with a Blast of Force spell.

The crossbow bolt managed to miss Dorian’s heart and lungs, punching through under his collar bone and shattering his shoulder blade on the way out. Wren had managed to close her horrendous wound with her magic after pushing back in most of the contents of her lower abdomen, but passed out from the effort. That’s when I heard the drums. I punched Dorian full in the face, which brought him back to his senses.  Pouring our only 2 healing draughts into him, we conferred quickly. It seems we had all heard the whispering, and we certainly both heard the drums now. We each threw an arm of the unconscious Wren over our shoulder (I due to my stature actuall supporting her body more from the waist) and began a panicked stumbling run south.  The drumming followed us, and soon we could hear and then see redcaps in the woods.  We ran. I don’t remember much of that endless night, running through the trees, drumming filling our heads. What I do know now, after the fact, is that we ran all night, exited the Tainted Wood at sunrise and still they chased us. The drumming did not continue into the day. We continued running, quaffing potions of Bear’s Endurance and Haste as we went until our meager store was gone (a total of 4 Bear’s Endurance and 2 Haste). They followed, slowly closing the gap between us. It was midafternoon when they began throwing darts and spears our way. Both Dorian and I took many wounds, and as we broke free of the tree line in the late afternoon, a spear went through my leg. We didn’t stop. We ran right into the lake and sank into the still waters of the Morning Mirror as spears rained down around us.

It was Wren who saved us. She used her magic to somehow create a bubble of air under the water, and we rode the gentle undercurrent away from the shore and our pursuers. We rode out the night in that bubble, and Wren recast to allow us to continue through the next day. That evening we had been washed into the Greendeep. We put ashore at night and made camp. In the morning it was clear that Wren was dying. Her magic had sealed the wound, but the mess of her innards was slowly poisoning her from the inside. We patched up Dorian as best we could, but had to reserve the majority of Wren’s healing to keep her alive. Dorian and I rigged a stretcher and carried her along the shore and into the Firnockt for 3 days until we reached Koylrest at night.

Koylrest had been recently attacked when we arrived. It seems Baron Tullimus has converted to the Chovalian Church and turned a blind eye to their activities in his barony. A Chovalian priest, similar I suppose to Feanor, had denounced the local Omnian cleric and made clear that only the Chovalian version of Omnianism would be permitted in Woodspear Barony. The residents of Koylrest didn’t give a flying fig what their baron approved and had gathering in the town square, armed, to “encourage” the Chovalian and his guard to leave town. That’s probably the only reason the town survived when the redcaps attacked.

Redcaps swarmed into town and set fire to many buildings. Fully a third of the population was slain before the redcaps were pushed back. Mysteriously all of the Chovalians failed to survive. An Omnian Priest – our version – named Father Eon was traveling north with a companion, leaving the meeting you described in Carradeen I believe, and saw the fire. He came and did his best to help the townsfolk.

Dorian and I walked in the 2nd night after the attack. Father Eon was still there and was able to fully restore Wren, for which he will always be mentioned in my prayers. The small healing spells Wren had been casting over the past few days to mend Dorian’s shoulder had actually healed the bone wrong, and Father eon had to break his shoulder blade with a hammer before healing him. Let me tell you, that is a sound that affects you in the pit of your stomach.  We spent the night in Father Eon’s tent, and being exhausted and emotionally wrecked Dorian and I told him everything. I had wits enough about me to avoid telling him about Alerhaus and his box and the Scrolls of Epic Legend, but most else got spilled that night.

Eon listened and absorbed our tales. He did not comment, but fed us and healed us as he listened. I slept better that night that any I can remember. In the morning Eon invited us to a private breakfast. He told us many things, but the following I found to be especially pertinent so I have reproduced it here:

“Vespatius was the catalyst. Things could have kept going on a low simmer, but when he called out into the Void he cranked the heat up to a boil. What you have to remember is that the most valuable thing is and always has been information. It’s why you might hoard moldering documents in a university tower. Or desperately search for a receptacle with your animated proxies. Or send your shadows to the four corners, listening. All looking for the same information. What I wonder, is if you already knew this information, and perhaps quietly always knew it to begin with, why send your pieces west?”

Dorian of course was completely lost in this speech but through your journals and adventures it made far more sense to me. Which is why I found myself saying, “You didn’t mention the God King.” Father Eon looked at me and suddenly smiled. “Yes, of course. That’s why.” He then gave us three horses and a scroll to give to Onsmythe, which he said would restore Father Theodore.  I asked him where he was going, and he said north to the university, to visit an old friend and perhaps borrow a book. His final words to us were, “Keep to the Omnian faith. Believe, place your trust in people who believe, and fear not a death in the service of the greater good.”

We rode out that morning heading northwest along the tree line. Our ride and camps were quiet; none of us had had a chance to process Uval’s death and the reality of that event cast a pall over our company. On the evening of the 3rd day, 17th of Spring Waxing, we rode into Halvenspring.

Here is where I have to rewind my narrative and cover events in Halvenspring in my absence. But it is late and I still have much to fill you in on. So now I shall rest my pen, pray that this missive finds you in good health, and continue my tale at the next opportunity.

Sincerely,

Osgood of Dragomir Tower

Notes:
The session opened with an extensive shopping trip that morning, and a good portion of the session was devoted to resource management for the Knights.

After they spent the morning shopping, they gathered all of their things and went to Mother Hazel. They had a brief conversation where they asked hazel how to get to the Halls of the Silent Lady. She told them to walk south from Boarlanding into the ocean and keep walking along the ocean floor until you get there. She then made good on her promise to send them anywhere they wished, and opened a portal in a rock face. The party, horses cart and all, went through the portal.

They found themselves on a stretch of sandy beach just east of Westport in Goldmeadow. Heading into Westport, they stopped at the Sailor’s Rest Inn and paid the barman for a recommendation on a Captain who would be willing to sail into the uncharted west.

Through the barman’s introduction they met and hired Bartholomew, Captain of the Sea Hero, a three masted caravel. They agreed on a price of 15,000 gp; 5,000 in advance for supplies, 5,000 to be kept in the Captain’s strongbox, and 5,000 to remain in the hands of the party until completion of the voyage. They party also insisted on accompanying Bartholomew on his provision buying.

The party spends the next 3 days watching the provisioning, and Fyn goes shopping for parts for Ratchets while Grigor and Frumious buy what they need to convert a portion of the cargo hold into a laboratory.  At night during these days Fyn tries to disable the traps on the 9 Words of Power. He is finally successful but loses three fingers to a trap.  Two fingers we able to be quickly reattached by the paladins with lay-on-hands, but his left thumb remains severed. Fyn bought the necessary parts to make a prosthetic.

In conversation with Percival about the book, Percival lets slip that there are 16 words of power, not 9.

The next morning the Sea Hero shoves off. A month passes (25 days) during which Grigor makes certain items, Frumious brews potions, Fyn constructs his new thumb (with magical aid from Grigor), and Feydor and Bajol try to learn the ways and jobs of sailors. After a month of sailing, the Sea Hero rounds the southwestern horn of the continent and heads north along the coast for a week (5 days). The Sea Hero puts in near a dark tower where an “Endless” supposedly lives to stock up on fresh water and let the sailors stretch their legs on land before the big push west (day 6 from the horn). The Knights take a dinghy out to the tower.

Knocking on the door they meet the Endless, who sardonically and obviously falsely gives his name as “Bob”. His tower is in disarray and is in the process of being packed up. He is in the process of leaving, having concluded his research on this world. The Knights and he converse a little, and he offers to show them a Chronosi. They agree to meet one. End Session

Enemies Defeated:  Lorith, 4 Fire Worms

Notes:
The Will crept off, refusing payment due to his “failure”, and the Knights ran into the main Xiannian Tomb after Lorith – Fyn ditching the last construct and joining them (the construct being too large to enter).

The Tomb was hot inside, and the party charged straight ahead, down a sloping corridor and into a room filled with lava. A thin stone bridge 100 feet across spanned the molten lake, with a large circular metal vault door at the end. About 20 feet from the door on the bridge, Lorith waited. Fyn called out to Lorith, “It doesn’t have to be this way.” Lorith responded with “Will you let me pass un-molested? I can go?” Fyn paused for a moment, and replied, “You’ll have to answer some questions first.” Lorith smiled and said, “No then. Bring it.” The Knight began advancing on Lorith. Grigor cast a spell that launched an orb of acid at him, and Lorith laughed as it hit. “I knew you’d use magic!” he crowed. “The fire worms don’t like magic.” Suddenly, as in response to Grigor’s spell, four large snake-like beasts rose out of the lava and attacked Grigor, spewing fire down on the party. Grigor was instantly killed.

Frumious made it to his side (while Feydor confronted Lorith and Fyn engaged the worms) and cast a spell called revenance. Grigor sprang back to life and rejoined the battle. After exchanging a few blows, Feydor hit Lorith with a mighty blow (critical hit with Storm’s Fury while smiting evil for 120+ points of damage) that slew him. A few rounds later the knights had mopped up the fire worms. At the end of the fight, Frumious told Grigor that his spell did not actually raise him, it only delayed his death for 8 minutes. The group began discussing how to deal with Grigor’s body, and whether to have him reincarnated as with Feydor. Grigor, on the other hand, declared he still had 7 minutes, and demanded that the party continue through the tomb – albeit speedily.

Fyn set to work on the circular door. It was obvious that the Illmarian excavation had tried to breach the entrance but failed. Fyn however was able to open the locks and disable the devices, and the tomb was unsealed. Racing into the long forgotten tomb, the party bypassed all side corridors and went straight for the heavily trapped door at the end. Fyn dispensed with all the traps and they entered a vast room dominated by a raised stepped dais – an interior ziggurat. On top was a massive stone sarcophagus. Lining the walls, 6 rows high, were upright niches where mummified bodies looked down or up at the sarcophagus. Racing to the top, the party paused while Grigor read the pictographs carved into the stone, and then opened the sarcophagus. Inside was a smaller, human sized wooded coffin surrounded by the skeletons of dozens of bodies. Prying the lid off of the coffin they found a mummified body, with a book at his feet, an ivory rod on one side and a golden sickle on the other, and a golden crown on his head. All the items were magical. Gigror identified them. The ivory rod had the ability to resurrect the dead, and Frumious quickly used it on Grigor before he expired.

The pictograms identified the central figure as the Vac the King of Uthden Fields. Furthermore it explained that he had had all the noblemen and their families slain shortly before his death – they being the bodies in the wall – and was buried with his wives (who were buried alive with his coffin – the skeletons in the stone sarcophagus). His children were slain unto the 2nd generation and their blood mixed with the mortar upon which his coffin rests (the ziggurat).

The book was titled the Nine Words of Power, and was heavily and complicatedly trapped (the cover and binding). Fyn believed that with some time to study and work on it, he could open the book. The sickle was a horrifically evil item. If used to sacrifice a woman or child, the blood can be drained from the wound into a chalice. If this blood is drunk by the person performing the sacrifice while still warm, they received a +6 profane bonus to all ability scores for one week.

The crown was also evil. It could be used to create simple golden rings (the rings must actually be forged by a jewelry maker). The wearer of the ring could not remove the ring. The wearer of the crown can dominate, as per spell, the wearer of a ring with no saving throw. The crown can control up to 100 rings at once. The rings do not have to willingly be put on. Low on spells and hit points, the party potioned up and exited the tomb to confront the final construct. To their surprise (and dismay) the construct was destroying the last remnants of the camp. It ignored them, continuing with its work, and Fyn was able to disable it. A handful of random papers from the command tent was all that could be salvaged.

The party reentered the tomb to explore all the side passages the had run past. Grigor stayed behind in the entrance corridor to examine the papers recovered from the Illmarian camp. Four guards, who had been instructed to ambush the party in the tomb, cautiously exited and asked if they could be allowed to flee. Grigor summoned back the Knights (Fyn stayed behind in the tomb to continue exploring) and they interrogated the guards before letting them go. The information gleaned was:

*Fingali was not part of the group, but working on behalf of someone allied with them
*The University excavation had been here 3 months
*Books, scrolls, weapons, and treasure found in the tombs were sent back to Illmar by cart as it was found. The last cart left 2 weeks ago.
*Lorith was in charge.

The party went back into the tomb to find Fyn and catch him up. They found him bleeding but conscious, having accidently set off a trap that almost disemboweled him. Exploring the rest of the tombs, they found King Vac’s Vizier, a room where the royal guard was buried, a rack full of magical weapons, and a room that had 3 large chests of gold and one chest of gems. They camped for the night in the hallway.

While they rested Grigor read the excavation papers. It expressed Lorith’s frustration at being unable to open the main tomb’s vault door. It also expressed surprise at Mario’s activity. Apparently, Lorith had been sent to assassinate Mario a year ago, which he did and destroyed the corpse. He wondered who was posing as Mario now, but orders from the University told him not to interfere with the “Mario imposter”. It records Fingali’s arrival, with instruction from the University to work with Fingali. The evil dwarf was looking for two things in the tombs, a book box and a set of 77 scrolls, and he searched through all the artifacts found in the excavation for them but they were not there. Lorith details the first encounter with the Knights, noting that Fingali slew one, and that they chased the Knights all the way to Loston, but would go father out of fear of the witch. When they returned their guards left behind said that Fingali went into one of the lesser tombs for an hour or two, came out, gathered his stuff, and rode off to the east. Lorith went into the tomb Fingali did and found a previously unknown hidden panel in a wall that was now open.  Summarizing that Fingali had found what he was looking for, Lorith cursed him in his notes, knowing that the Knights would return and Fingali would be a great ally in the next fight.

The next morning they stripped the large plate off of each giant construct and used it as a skiff, placing the treasure chests (2 each) on them. They spent the day exploring and examining the Illmarian campsite. Resting for the night, they then began the slow tedious journey back towards Loston in the morning.

It took them 3 days to get back to Loston, arriving late at night they check in to the Hilltop Inn. The next day they paid a local shopkeep to appraise the chest of gems, and the party spends the entire day counting coins from the chests. Each chest has about 20K gp, and the gems are worth around 80k.

The next day they realized that they never took the time to examine the Xiannian bodies to see if they were human or not. They saddle up and make the 2 day journey back to the tombs. Arriving in the evening they re-enter the tombs. Fyn had reset the locks but was able to reopen them and they unwrapped a mummy for close examination. They discover that the skin color was of a reddish hue and thay they did not appear to have hair on their heads, not even eyebrows. The internal organs were slightly different in arrangement and size, but they couldn’t tell if that was a racial difference or a result of time and burial practices.

Suddenly Frumious remembered that he had the spell Speak with Dead (carefully labeled by him “useless” in his book). Grigor’s mind almost shut down as he realized that they had around 1,000 bodies they could quiz, but the group talked him out of forcing Frumious to spend the next decade in the tomb with him asking every corpse about first world daily life.  Instead they let Frumious rest and rememorize, and chose to use Speak with Dead on four corpses: the King, the Vizier, and two random noblemen.

Questions and answers for the Vizier:
1) Who do you worship? I worship Pipos
2) What is Omnos’ role in the world? Omnos is a God, the Creator God
3) Did Omnos create the other Gods? I do not know; that is not taught

Questions and answers for King Vac:
1) Have you heard of Ellicor? Yes
2) What was Ellicor in your world? Ellicor is the Crafter God
3) What was the Shadow Lord’s function in your world? I know of no one with that name

Questions for nobleman 1:
1) Do you know of Brulor? Yes
2) What is Brulor’s function? He is a God.
3) What lies to the West? A vast ocean, and then another land.

Questions for nobleman 2:
1) Are their people in the land to the far west? I don’t know.
2) Are you familiar with the Laughing Maid? No.
3) Do you know who the Chronosi are? No.

The party then rides through the night to Loston, resting during the day, and riding again at night, finally reaching Loston in the morning. They gather their cart, stuff, and Bajol and intend to shop before moving on. End Session

Old Soul, New Shell

Feydor had been grievously wounded, and Frumious was, at the moment, an inadequate conduit for the restorative powers of Omnos. There were prayers that could help, but he had not unlocked their secrets, and that meant his comrade in faith, his friend, was divorced from his vessel, which - being as it was the only part of him they could carry - the Knights of Mist Valley had strapped to his steed as they rode swiftly back to Loston.

Assumptions had been made that Frumious was in conflict with Mother Hazel, but these assumptions misunderstood basic Omnian theology. That the witch was powerful despite her worship of a different god did nothing to dispel the notion of Omnos' divinity and role as creator of all that was known and unknown. Frumious had no difficulty conceiving of an Omnos who created lesser divine beings, even those who could be wardens over the domains of mortal life and death. Such beings could be servants, willing or not, to Omnos, and there could be a variety of reasons why these servants would not reveal their true nature to the penitents who served them. Yet his companions were either loquacious or stubborn, and Frumious' explanation seemed unlikely to result in a satisfying conclusion for anyone, so the cleric was content to play his role, and cede agency to the friends who could eagerly and quickly interact with the woman.

And Mother Hazel was generous towards the Knights, offering them their choice of a solution to their Feydor problem. In fact, the witch, in her capacity as Omnos' unwitting servant, revealed to Frumious that the piccolo given to the young gnome by his father might have significance yet undiscovered. From this, Frumious decided to take a more active role in understanding this object, which he hoped would provide further insight into the glory of Omnos.

Calling upon her magic, the witch bound Feydor to a new body, this one stronger than the last. There was a bit of confusion for a moment while the less theologically burdened among the Knights determined what to do with Feydor's former vessel, but a quick explanation from the cleric made it clear that everything that made Feydor truly what he is was now contained in new flesh, and the corpse before them represented only the potential for a future nemesis if it was not properly dealt with. And so it was, and so the Knights of Mist Valley were whole once more.

Session 39

Date: 7/5/2015
Attending: Jake, Chris, Joey, Aaron, Dave, Daniel as The Will
Absent: Justin – in Ohio
Start Time: 7:30 p.m.
End Time: 10:30 p.m.
XP awarded: 2400
Game time elapsed:  3 days
Enemies Defeated:

Notes:
Waking up in the Hilltop Inn of Loston, the knights took their deceased comrade (Feydor) to Mother Hazel. She said She had the ability to bring Feydor back in one of three ways – she could reincarnate him into a new body for 6,000 gp, she could tie his spirit to his deceased body (making him an intelligent undead) for free, or she could bring him back alive in his original body for 10,000 gp and her choice of any 3 magic items the party owned.  After much discussion, the party opted for reincarnation. Mother Hazel cast the spell and a new body was created – that of an orc.

The Knights went back to Loston and purchased some spell books in town. While in the shop they hired a brutal looking character known only as “The Will of Omnos”, shortened to “The Will” (his sword is named “The Fury of Omnos, because Daniel), as extra muscle and left for the Xiannian Tombs shortly after lunch. They traveled for the rest of the day, camped, traveled the following day and camped again.

On the second night, during “The Will’s” watch, they were attacked by 15 mercenary guards out of the Illmarian Excavation.  The knights were victorious, but spent the first part of the day recuperating from the fight before traveling on to the Tombs.

Upon arriving at the Xiannian Tombs escavation they noticed that most of the camp had been broken down and almost all of the tomb entrances collapsed. Only the large tomb by the main tent (which was still standing) was untouched. Ten guards and the two giant constructs stood outside the tent. The party attacked. During the fight the tent fell revealing 12 more guards, 6 elite guards, 4 casters, and Lorith. Fingali was not present.  It was a hard brutal fight, which ended with Lorith fled into the large tomb, Fyn leading one construct around camp, and the other construct and all other opposing combatants dead. The party then decides to pursue Lorith into the tomb. End Session

Session 38

Date: 6/28/2015
Attending: Jake, Justin, Joey, Aaron, Dave
Absent: Chris - Ill
Start Time: 7:55 p.m.
End Time: 10:20 p.m.
XP awarded: 2750
Game time elapsed:  3 days
Enemies Defeated:  12 mounted guards; fought but were forced to retreat from: 2 huge constructs, 4 casters, 16 guardsmen, Lorith, Fingali

Notes:
When Grigor suddenly comes down with an illness, the Knights decide to postpone their shopping trip in favor of exploring the Xiannian Tombs. The next morning they head out, and ride all day southeast into the plains of Goldmeadow. In the evening they see the lights of Loston behind them, but also see lights ahead, that makes it seem that they are heading towards a town. After an uneventful night they continue their journey, but encounter riders around midday. These riders, 12 in number, approach and tell the Knights to head north or due east, but not to continue the way they are headed. The knights declare their intent to continue where they are headed and announce themselves as the Knights of Mist Valley. The riders confer and seem to ride off, but actually circle around and attack the party.

The knights make short work of the riders; one yields rather than be cut down. They interrogate him, Fyn punching him repeatedly in the dick, and find out that the Illmarian University has been excavating the Xiannian Tombs for months, and has a sizable encampment there. The leader of the excavation is named Lorith, and the reason why the patrol attacked is that the University has placed a bounty on the heads of the Knights of mist Valley - 5,000 gp per confirmed kill. The party ties two sets of half plate armor to the guy, binds his hands, uses rope to limit his stride length, and tells him to walk to the Excavation. Then they ride on.

They reach the excavation shortly before dusk. A large quarry/ravine is set in the ground, and 18 or so Tombs are revealed as set in the walls of the canyon. There are numerous tents and workers hurrying around. Fyn sneaks down the winding road into the canyon, past several guard posts, but is spotted by two massive 14 foot tall metal construct sentinels who can obviously see him (and look like giant versions of Ratchets). He runs around camp, setting fire to tents, and uses the magic of his cloak to summon dire bats. As the constructs chase him they sound a horn noise.

On top of the ravine, the rest of the Knights hear the horn and go rushing down the road to the canyon floor. They charge through the pandemonium of the camp only to pull up short outside of the main tent, where the Illmarian forces have rallied (and have pikes set for a charge). Sixteen mercenary guards and four casters are gathered around Lorith and -surprise surprise- the dwarf Fingali. A brutal fight ensues. Fyn continues to lead the constructs around keeping them out of the fight. Frumious throws mighty magics around, and Bajol and Feydor ride into the thick of battle. Luck is not with our heroes however, and Feydor had difficulty landing blows. Twice Bajol's attempts to trample his foes were rebuffed, once by Lorith himself.Bajol summoned Zephyr to assit the fight, but then Lorith slew Bajol's mount Bear. Finally Fingali dealt a mighty blow (crit) that brutally killed Feydor in the saddle.

By this time one of the constructs had left the chase and come to join the fight, and Fyn was trying to maneuver into position to help. With Feydor dead, Frumious squaring off against Fingali alone, Bajol holding off multiple guards and their leader Lorith, the Knights made the reluctant decision to fall back and return another day. Bajol mounted Zephyr and rode off, Brutus grabbed Feydor's body and fled, Frumious summoned a celestial griffon and was carried to safety, and Fyn grabbed the nearest horse to his position and hightailed it out of there. The remaining guards mounted up and gave chase. The two groups rode through the night, but once they were a day outside of Loston the mercenaries pulled away, obviously unwilling to go any further. The Knights continued slowly into Loston, arriving late at night and reacquiring rooms at the Hilltop Inn. End Session

Session 37

Start Time: 7:20 p.m.
End Time: 10:10 p.m.
XP awarded: 2000
Game time elapsed:  3 days
Enemies Defeated:  Demonic Skeleton

Notes:
Continuing the exploration of the tomb complex, the party finds a book called Slight of Hand Tactics, along with several magic items and potions in the unexplored burial chambers, saving the large double door at the end for last.

Approaching the large double door, Fyn carefully searched it for traps. There were 4: a magical circle of death trap, a magical feeble mind trap, a mechanical pit trap, and a mechanical poisoned dart trap. Fyn had trouble disarming the pit trap, triggering it several times, but was able to finally disable it, the darts, and the circle of death. Unfortunately he set off the feeblemind trap and was reduced to a drooling imbecile.

Heading into the room, they saw a large unopened stone sarcophagus, a pile of bones, and the bodies of 3 adventurers. The bones animated into a large 4 armed skeleton with a tail and a canine shaped skull. They Knights fought valiantly, and were able to win the day despite Bajol being incapacitated (Justin absent) and Fyn feebleminded.

Opening the sarcophagus (which was trapped as well) they found a sack of coins, a first world scroll titled “Prayers of the Omnian Faithful”, a magical breastplate, and Storm’s Fury – an extremely  magical heavy pick. They rested in the room for 16 hours, and then swam back out of the complex – feeding Fyn a potion of water breathing to do so.

They found their companions waiting in a clearing not far from the pool. Grigor consulted with his familiar, and determined that Grandmother Hazel, the Witch of Loston, would be their best bet to have Fyn’s wits restored. It was a day and a half journey to Loston.

Loston proved to be a village built on the tops of mountain foothills. Mother Hazel lives in a cave converted to a cottage; she cures Fyn but does not let anyone inside her home. After curing Fyn, the party heads to the village inn – Hilltop – but Grigor stays behind to talk with Hazel.

Mother Hazel’s conversation with Grigor can be summed up in the following:
*She knew his grandfather Albaer Dragomir
*She is not interested in events outside of her village
*She confirms the existence of other planes – there is a world enchantment that prevents access
*The “demons” that the Tainted Ones worship are extraplanar
*When asked about the various players (Ellicor, Puppet King, etc…) advised the party to find out what is at stake before committing to a side
*Says the Gnome of Gnomewood may have more info, but to be careful in approaching him
*Mentioned that the Endless who lives on the west coast is from another world
*Grigor asked her to try to scry the location of Mario and Ellicor she did
*Mario is on a boat traveling the river
*Ellicor is on a ship sailing west
*To cancel a debt owed to Grigor’s grandfather, offered to magically transport the party to a location of their choice

Grigor met up with the Knights and relayed the info. The knights unloaded the cart into their room at the Hilltop Inn and did a full inventory/upkeep. In the morning they decided to stop and provision up. Wandering into the general store, an obviously magical sword is noticed hanging on the wall. The proprietor nonchalantly mentions it is for sale; it seems that he has quite a few magic items for sale as local adventurers who explore the Xiannian Tombs tend to convert their booty to cash at his shop. The party decides it’s time to drop some serious coin. End Session

Session 36

Date: 6/14/2015
Attending: Jake, Joey, Aaron, Dave, Chris, Justin, Ben as Master Shake
Absent: none
Start Time: 7:40 p.m.
End Time: 10:30 p.m.
XP awarded: 1750
Game time elapsed:  1 day
Enemies Defeated:  1 void beast, 2 dark knights, 4 wraiths, 1 dread wraith

Notes:

In the tomb they find Master Shake, his other adventuring party slain by the denizens of the crypt.  He says that he is in the tomb looking for something specific (treasure), and joins with the party. In one of the burial chambers they find an enormous alligator like beast with tentacles, which appears to be an outsider. They slay it but it takes a lot out of them. They fight two dark knights in another room, and hole up in a 3rd room to rest and rememorize. It is a fitful night and they are attacked first by 4 wraiths, and then later by a dread wraith before finally getting some rest. They find various magic items and a book titled the Art of Jumping. Finally they find the burial chamber of the cavalier, and Feydor is able to take the scrolls of the order. Master Shake trips a trap and falls down a long chute into god knows where. They knights shed a brief tear and then move on continuing to explore. End Session

Session 35

Date: 6/7/2015
Attending: Jake, Joey, Aaron, Dave, Chris
Absent: Justin – medical tests in morning
Start Time: 7:20 p.m.
End Time: 10:30 p.m.
XP awarded: 1000
Game time elapsed:  6 days
Enemies Defeated:  1 dire bear, 2 black bears

Notes:
In the morning the party awakes and continues to explore the ruined tower. Making their way up to the second level of the ruins they find a black altar and evidence of the dark rites of the Tainted Ones. Frumious consecrates the altar, destroying it. Having completely cleared the tower, the party heads back to the camp outside the tower clearing. Grigor examines the surrounding forest and discovers that just underneath the mossy floor is a vast network of ruined buildings. They party sleeps all day and then begins journeying at night.

They pick up the cart and continue through the day, arriving at Woodbounty midafternoon. They stop at a local shop that sells magical goods, the Twinkling Oak, and then head to the local shrine which is tended by an orc named Samac. Samac is not a full priest, but has visions and some divine spellcasting ability. He informs Frumious when asked that his bishop is Rudulac, who dwells in Boarlanding. Samac has a vision of Feydor opening something with a blue triangle on it, which the party interprets as them being on the right track. They take rooms in the Quiet Beech Inn and head out in the morning.

They continue traveling west through the woods when they encounter 2 black bears lead by a dire bear. They put down the beasts after a hard fight, and Grigor sends Kyros out to scout around. Kyros sees and reports a figure Jarl identifies as the Beastlord – an Orc dressed in furs. He is traveling with 4 dire bears, 12 dire wolves, 4 dire boars, and a large cat of some kind. Grigor wants to meet/confront him, but the rest of the Knights, particularly Fyn, advise against it. The group decision is to ride through the night to put as much distance as possible between them and the Beastlord, which they do. At day break they sleep for 7 hours and then ride through the rest of the day and late into the night.

They get up at daybreak the following day and ride west, camping at night to get back on schedule. In the morning they confer with their guides Jarl and Bors, and decide to go straight to the tomb first. They arrive at night; the tomb is submerged in a small forest pool. Jarl and Bors tell them that that is where the weapon known as Storm’s Fury is located.

Swimming down into the pool, they find the submerged entrance, and after avoiding a trap on the door, enter the tomb. End Session.

Session 34

Absent: None
Start Time: 7:20 p.m.
End Time: 10:30 p.m.
XP awarded: 2200
Game time elapsed:  2 days
Enemies Defeated:  6 owlbears, 2 spectres, and 8 advanced skeletons

Notes:
The Party journeyed on towards Forestend, arriving that evening. They book rooms in the Inn of the Last Candle. The innkeeper’s name was Tully. They sold and bought goods, and met the acquaintance of Jarl, a Bear of Loston, and Bors a Wolf of Loston.  Loston is a removed village to the west, and it has two marital orders, Bears and Wolves, which patrol the forest and protect the village. The party made arrangements to have Jarl and Bors escort them into Mossreach Forest, looking for ruins as they made their way towards Loston. Jarl told them of a Tomb in the area around Loston where a potent magical weapon was said to be stored. He also described the blue triangle insignia used by the Cavaliers of the Blue Mount and said that it was in the tomb somewhere. Jarl also told the party that the Xiannian Tombs, their chosen destination, were not far from Loston to the southeast.

The next morning, led by Jarl and Bors, the party heads to the forest, parking the cart under a large bush in the tree line. They follow a winding trail into Mossreach, and encounter 6 owlbears along the way (which they slay). Arriving at the first ruin at night, an old tower long since collapsed past the second floor, they begin to investigate.

The tower ruins are haunted, and on the first floor they fight and destroy two spectres and 8 advanced skeletons. After the fight they retreat to the camp outside the clearing to rest up before continuing.  End Session
