Profile: Red Sashes

The Red Sashes is a police/guard organization in the Marque of Dalus, functioning both as town guard for Shadowmount and the Marquis’ peacekeeping force in the northern area of the Marque. They are identified by the red sash that they wear either from shoulder to hip or around their waist.

The Red Sashes are empowered to take action as they see fit, including executions if deemed necessary. The Marquis has few rules and laws, but the ones he does are expected to be strictly and severely enforced. Aside from that the various Captains of the Red Sashes make what judgement calls they feel are appropriate.

The Red Sashes respect their lord’s power and authority, but do not revere him and certainly do not love him. Red Sashes who prove to be power hungry or unfair usually disappear suddenly and violently, one particularly incompetent sergeant being snatched by a grey flying humanoid beast in the middle of a field on a clear day. His head was later thrown down amongst his patrol.

Profile: Company of the Bright Spear

The Company of the Bright Spear was an adventuring party that was active between 322 SV and 335 SV. Their adventuring was intercontinental, and they won fame for destroying a Cult that worshipped the Dark Necromancer in the city of Nath. They took their name from their leader Perry’s weapon of choice – an enchanted spear that glowed with a brilliant blue light when wielded. At the height of their notoriety they had twelve members, but after the final climatic battle with the Cult only four survived.

Those four chose to join up with the Valian Army during the Treyvan War of 335 SV because Lt. Gen. Karl was tasked with laying siege to the Dark Necromancer’s Tower, and the Company saw a chance to end the threat of the Dark Necromancer once and for all. During the siege of the Tower the Company of the Bright Spear along with the Knights of Mist Valley penetrated the tower and presumably confronted the Dark Necromancer. No one knows the details of that encounter, but it seems the Dark Necromancer was destroyed but none of the remaining members of the Bright Spear survived.

The members of the Company of the Bright Spear who survived the Cult’s destruction and confronted the Dark Necromancer were:

Akkan the Jovial
Perry Spearwielder
Zack the Rogue

Herbian (a wizard)

Profile: Knights of Mist Valley

The Knights of Mist Valley are an adventuring group popularized in several songs of recent years. Originally a military squad during the Treyvan War (335 SV) designated Badger group, they served under Lt. Gen. Karl during the assault on the Dark Necromancer’s Tower.

While many deeds are recorded in song and tale, only the military records filed in Boarlanding are used as reference here.

The forces of mercenaries and Beastmen gathered by the Dark Necromancer to send in aid to Mario Treyvan’s armies were camped in two valleys when Lt. Gen. Karl, supported by a column out of the Dragon Wastes led by court mage Trevor, divided his forces and attacked. The Dark Necromancer took the field in return, and blanketed the eastern valley in a thick mist, and then summoned a mighty storm that threw lightning into the now obscured melee. The larger group of Karl’s forces was in the western valley.  After heavy fighting they secured the western valley and moved into the eastern valley. Upon arriving the mist began clearing (the Dark Necromancer having returned to his tower) and found the results of a massive slaughter with hundreds dead on both sides. The only individuals left standing was Badger group, which the rest of the army named the Knights of Mist Valley in awe.

Later during the actual assault of the tower, the field was heavily contested due to the large number of undead the Dark Necromancer brought into play. The Knights of Mist Valley along with the adventurers called the Company of the Bright Spear alone fought their way into the Dark Necromancer’s Tower and confronted the Necromancer. The details are not clear on what exactly happened in the tower in the military report; a highly descriptive but questionable account is presented in the song Fall of the Tower of Darkness. What is known is that at one point the tower suffered from an initial explosion, and then a second explosion during its collapse. The second explosion blew the top balcony off of the tower and through that the Knights were able to survive.

The Knights were largely inactive in the years following the Treyvan War, but have recently been spotted – reportedly  confronting the Marquis Daedalus of Avonhollow in his keep and fighting bandits and Tainted Ones.

The original Knights of Mist Valley (per military records) were:

Feydor Riverman
Bajol Risus
Fyn Sosyl
Frumious Hawthorne
Grigor Dragomir
Thomas of Boarlanding
Bruce of Greymoors
Nolan of Halvenspring
Justarius of Halvenstomb (deceased)

Profile: Badger Group

During the Illmarian war of succession of 335 SV, commonly called the Treyvan War, Luigi Guardos was able to invoke the mutual defense treaty of 321 SV, and received military aid from the Kingdom of the Seven Vales against the forces of his cousin Mario Treyvan.  One of the armies sent from the Seven Vales was a special unit under the leadership of Lieutenant General Karl. The bulk of the forces from the Seven Vales were conscripts, and the conscript squads in Lt. Gen. Karl’s command were given color and animal designations.

Badger Group (originally Green Badger) was one such squad, made up of individuals from the north Mossreach area. It was led by Sergeant Thomas of Boarlanding. Over the course of the campaign it was merged with other groups but maintained the designation Badger Group until the battle of Mist Valley. While active, Badger group was distinguished and noted for its ability and was frequently used as a scouting squad. The original members of Badger group were:

Feydor Riverman
Bajol Risus
Fyn Sosyl
Frumious Hawthorne
Grigor Dragomir
Nolan of Halvenspring
Thomas of Boarlanding

Members of Badger group that were added later were:

Bruce of Greymoors
Justarius of Halvenstomb (deceased)
Colin of Halvenstomb (deceased)
Master Shake of Halvenstomb
Kellen Cloudrest (presumed deceased)
Icabod of Merrioc
Murph of Merrioc

NPC Profile: Father Theodore

Home: Halvenspring

Public Lore: Father Theodore is the local village priest for the Church of Omnos in Halvenspring. He was assigned to the village some 30 years ago although no one seems to know or care where he was prior. The villagers of Halvenspring view him as wise and he has a paternal air about him. Known for his patience, fairness, and even temper he is often called upon to settle disputes that would otherwise be taken to the Grey Circle or the Sheriff. He has a strange friendship with Onsmythe – they have a playful rivalry regarding the village’s largely wholesale conversion from Onsmythe’s druidic beliefs to the Omnian faith – a conversion that mainly occurred prior to Father Theodore’s arrival. Most of his sermons deal with community, charity, and faith in the face of adversary. For such a prominent member of the village, he receives very few visitors and only rarely any kind of obvious communication from other Church members.

Physical Description: Father Theodore is a robust healthy man in his early sixties. He wears the common brown robe associated with the lower clergy of Omnos, clasped with a wide leather belt over sturdy boots. He is grey of hair and beard, both of which he wears at about a foot in length. He is thick around the middle but still active and muscular – his belly has merely caught up with his chest in old age. His skin is wrinkled in the manner of one who has seen a lot of sun, and he stands about 5’11’.

The Parliament of Owls

The Parliament of Owls will tell you that they are “an informal group of sages, wizards, and other intellectuals seeking fraternity in the pursuit of knowledge.” In reality it is a group of about five friends who correspond and occasionally meet regarding their various studies and interests. The group was originally just Bertram and Eramus, but has grown over the past two decades to include Oscarius, Grovath, and Telmon. All of its members are from and reside in the Kingdom of the Seven Vales.

Bertram is a dwarven sage who lives in Northcross. He focuses on studying Tainted Ones, specifically Steel-Toes and Redcaps. Bertram is not a caster of any sort; indeed he seems terrified of the idea of using magic himself. He is content to read, share, and discuss his studies without actual application. He is an older dwarf whose hair is white. Instead of a traditional beard he has grown out his muttonchops and bound them with silver bands, leaving his chin and mouth clean shaven. He dresses in robes that were once very fine but are now grungy due to neglect.

Eramus is a halfling wizard who lives in Lakeview. He focuses on studying Awakened of the Seven Vales. Eramus is a whimsical prankster who seems to take life as it is. He is overly fond of sweets, not fond of travel, and is rarely completely sober. He is tall for a halfling and decidedly pear-shaped. He is in his late middle years and his hair is mostly white, with only a fringe of brown around the edges. None the less his face maintains a youthful quality and he seems impossibly energetic for someone of his age and weight. He is often dressed in simple trousers and a shirt covered by an ornately decorated waistcoat with color coordinated ascot.

Oscarius is a human wizard who lives in Dol Bradur. His particular area of study is the Dragon Wastes and the dragonkin found there. Oscarius has a sour disposition and tends to be seen as crabby and crotchety. In spite of his frequent comments suggesting that participation in the Owls is just a waste of his time he has never missed a meeting and responds promptly to all correspondence. He is short with a stocky build that does not suggest fat or muscle, merely solid. He is actually the second youngest Owl (after Telmon), not quite into his fifties, but carries on as if he was far older than his peers. His dark brown hair and beard are both cut to the same length (and streaked with grey), about 3 inches, giving him an almost furry appearance. He wears always a simple coarse hooded brown robe of the type favored by traveling friars.

Grovath is a small gnomish wizard who lives in Secondy. He studies the Chronosi and druidism, and has recently broadened his interest to include the clerical magic of the Omnian faith. He is far less talkative than his fellow Owls but is constantly attentive with a focus that can be a little unnerving. When he does speak it is usually direct and to the point. He dresses in plain trousers and a tunic, with a hooded cloak that he rarely takes off. He is old, and small even for a gnome. He wears a monocle on a chain and has a broad square beard and long white hair. An old injury causes him to walk with a cane.

Telmon is a human bard from Caer Lewynn.  The third son of an Ashvalian noble Telmon studies the history of the Seven Vales as well as local folklore. He is the youngest Owl by far, being about 35. He is goodnatured and easy going, happy to placate Oscarius or jest with Eramus as needed. He is clean shaven with close cropped hair, and wears good quality but not flashy clothes. He is the only Owl who is regularly armed, carrying a short sword as a matter of habit. Occasionally he can also be seen with a small steel shield. Telmon plays several musical instruments but most often travels with a small mandolin.

NPC Profile: Tullimus, Baron of Woodspear

Home: The Barony of Woodspear

Public Lore: Baron Tullimus is known to be an ambitious man who is deeply involved in the intrigues and politics of the Boarlandian Court. He sees himself as educated, cultured, and refined and tries desperately to distance himself from the rustic reputation of Mossreach, which often leads him to curry favor in other Kingdoms. Rarely seen at King Albus’ court in Caer Wynnic, he is instead a regular at the High King’s Court in Boarlanding and maintains a residence there. As a local ruler he has little patience for his subjects whom he sees as rough and unmannered, but also rarely interferes with their affairs. Most actual ruling of the Barony is done by his Captain of the Guard in Tullimus’ name. He has been trying to introduce the Sacrathian concept social elevation by right of birth for the past decade or so, going so far as to suggest that the nobility is a separate class of humanity that is naturally and inherently suited to leadership.

Physical Description: Tullimus is a thin man of sallow complexion. He is of average height, and his thinness is due to lack of physical activity rather than caused by it. He wears fine clothes of the latest fashions he has been exposed to, and his pale blond hair is carefully arranged in a manner that obviously takes time and care. He is about 45 years of age, and looks it. In spite of his obvious fastidious personal grooming, the veins show under the skin of his face and neck and his eyes have a constant redness to the lids giving him a constant sickly appearance.

NPC Profile: the Marquis Daedalus

Home: The Marque of Dalus

Public Lore: The Marquis is viewed by some as a source of favor and power and by many with fear. All are cautious of him. The common people know him to be a dark and distant lord, almost never seen. His rule is largely indifferent to his people although when he does choose to enact laws or take action it is usually harsh and draconian. The nobility of the Seven Vales have a different perspective. It seems the Marquis has been active for at least two hundred years, and though he is rarely in court he is behind many of the various intrigues and power plays in the Kingdom. A well-known tale tells of a Baron of Mossreach that aided the Marquis politically, and was rewarded with a vial that enabled the Baron to live until 150, all the while healthy and hale. He is viewed with distrust by the High King, largely because the Marquis seems to act against any who do not dance to his tune regardless of rank in peerage.

Physical Description: The Marquis is a medium sized man dressed in faded finery that fell out of fashion decades ago. He has something of a weak chin and thinning hair brushed away from a drastically receding hairline. His eyes seem sunken a little deeper in his head than is normal or comfortable. He has a slight potbelly but is not what one would call fat. He wears gloves and is dressed head to toe at all times. His face is coated with a heavy layer of makeup that is obvious to any observer. He speaks seldom, but when he does it is a soft growl that does not open his mouth or jaw. A careful observer will get the impression that his mouth goes impossibly wide, and that his makeup is intended to hide that fact. Indeed it seems that he has applied make up directly on his teeth to suggest a small mouth.
